Brief mention was made in the columns of the last edition of the Independent of last week of the death of Stephen M. Howard, one of Eagle township’s most respected pioneers, at his home on Friday morning, October 11, 1907.
Mr. Howard was born at Clarendon, N. Y., in 1826 and was at the time of his death 81 years, eight months and four days old. He came to Michigan in 1849 and in the following year married Miss Lucinda Pennington, who with one daughter, Mrs. S. Leonard and one son, John Howard, survive him.
From 1852 to 1856 he was in California prospecting, returning to buy the farm on which he has since lived.
In 1866 he became a member of the Masonic lodge, joining in Grand Ledge and afterwards transferring to Wacousta.
Funeral services which were very largely attended, were held at the house Sunday p. m. Rev. Mumford of the Lansing Universalist church officiating. He was burried with Masonic honors, in the Simmons cemetery.
