Peter VanderVolgan Obituary

PETER VANDERVOLGAN was born in Pittsford. Mich., Aug. 29th, 1842, and died at Lansing, Mich., Jan. 27. 1895.

For upwards of eighteen months he had been a great sufferer, yet throughout his long and lingering illness he manifested the greatest of patience. never murmuring nor complaining. The earlier part of his life was spent in Pittsford. In 1862 he enlisted in the 18th Mich. infantry, and served until the close of the war, giving his country the three best years of his life. Feb. 22, 1860, he was married to Miss Amy Jaques Miner. In 1873 they went to California, and after two years returned to Pittsford, remaining there for about eight years. They then moved to Grand Ledge, living here fourteen years. The last two years of his life were spent in Lansing.

The services were conducted at the house by Mrs. Marian Carpenter, of Detroit. The remains were taken to Pittsford and to the home of his brother Henry. From there they were taken to the beautiful little cemetery at Locust, followed by a large company of friends. After the service, conducted by the Rev. T. C. Jones, pastor of the Cong’l church of Pittsford, the Masonic fraternity took charge. and with a beautiful and very impressive service placed their brother in his last resting place.

Peter Vandervolgan was made a Mason in the city of Hudson 17 years ago. and afterwards became a R. A. M. He was also a member of the order of O. E. S. Both Hudson and Osseo lodges were present at the funeral. and a large number of the G. A. R. He was also a member of the A. O. U. W.

Besides his widow, he leaves three brothers-John C. of Grand Ledge. Ileary and Cornelius, of Pittsford, and two sisters-Mrs. Jas. Robins, Pittsford, and Mrs. J. H. Salisbury, of Middleton.
