Allen Olmstead
Allen Olmstead passed away at his farm home north west of Portland Sunday afternoon about five o’clock. He had been ill with heart trouble and bronchitis for about four weeks, but was so much better, he had been out doors and had just come in the house when he suddenly passed away. He was born in Cortland Co., New York, January 28, 1853. At the age of eighteen years he moved to Sebewa township with his parents, residing within four and one half miles of Portland the rest of his life. November 11, 1874 he marriedElvira Probert. Two children were born to this union. Mrs. Geo, Erdman of Danby and Eri Olmstead of Detroit. He was a member of the Portland Masonic lodge, the O. E. S. and the Portland grange. He leaves to mourn his loss the widow, daughter and son, two grand children, Mrs. O. J. La Barge of Salt Lake City Utah and Miss Barbara Olmstead of Detroit and two great grand children. One sister Mrs. Alice Merchant, besides the nephews and nieces. He was seventy five years three months and one day old at the time of his death. Relatives and friends came from Detroit, Middleton, Orleans and Ionia. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at his farm home. Rev. Stewart and Rev. Niles of Portland officiating, Burial was under the auspices of the Masonic lodge. There were an unusual abundance of beautiful flowers. He was a kind and loving husband and father and leaves a host of friends.
